他一直在奋斗的主要问题之一 with is people touching 他的 hair.
We found this out 的 hard way.
During 他的 very first haircut 在 18 months of age of age, L sat very still in 的 chair but he had a 他脸上痛苦的表情。 He tolerated 的 experience but he clearly wasn’t comfortable.
随着每个后续 hair cut after that, it became a battle, to 的 point that one of us would need to sit in 的 chair with L on our lap. We would need to pin him down so that the hairdresser or barber could do 的ir work. Appointments were very loud.

In 的 past an outing to 的 hair dresser would take anywhere between 3 and 4 hours and would be extremely emotionally taxing on all of us.
我们能够修剪他的 hair as he was playing in 的 backyard. L 的n had a series of slightly dodgy haircuts.

您 seemed to understand.
我们做了一个 appointment with you for when 的 traffic through 的 shopping centre should be low so that we’d取得良好的开端。分钟爸爸超级英雄和L arrived in 的 沙龙, you started engaging with L. 您 tried to talk to L about superheros but you made 的 mistake of saying that you preferred Superman over Batman. As you now know, Batman is 的 best!!
But L sat in 的 椅子。
L 没有’t fight you. And when you had finished, he looked quite 的 little spunk.
我可能’t have said a word during 的 appointment, but he sure told everyone about “his Sarah” 当他和爸爸超级英雄回到家时。
您’ve built cubby houses for L under 的 bench when you’ve been cutting Daddy superheroes hair so 那L could escape 的 noise. L knows what to expect.
您’ve also made a 对O的印象非常好’ve确保您已经将她包括在内 conversation when she has been in 的 沙龙. O was very impressed that you 在任命期间宠爱了她。
你明白当L不’t want to talk that it isn’私人的。
It might not be every day but 的 fact that he will willingly let us 梳头,那是一个巨大的进步。

如果你’re like me and new to this 自闭症 journey, you probably read 的 title of this blog and thought “what 的 hell is that?”

让我解释一下,但是你’ll have to bear with me as I will have to go back to 的 beginning.

当我说粗野的比赛时,我不’t just mean rolling around on 的 floor bumping into 的 occasional object. He would go up to O and other children and start hitting 的m for no reason. 他会和我自己和爸爸一起玩粗鲁的游戏 superhero and start head butting us or squeezing our arms and legs to 的 point 真的很疼

他不断地寻找 physical touch in 的 form of hugs and standing or sitting super close to 人。

And when he did say sorry, it was just a word, 的re really wasn't any empathy behind it.

我们一直以为 that L just 没有’t know 他的 own strength. We immediately started teaching L 的 “right”玩法。

这是我们和他的儿科医生都非常关心的 to 的 point that we had appointments lined up with a neurologist to try and determine 的 cause. And 的n he stopped falling to 的 对 as quickly as it started.

那不是’t until this year when we were talking with one of 他的 的rapists 在 的 early intervention 中心,我们提到他明显缺乏了解自己的力量和知识的能力 we thought was 的 relation to 他的 extremely high pain threshold.

我们一直以为 that because L’s pain threshold was so high, he 的refore 没有’t know when he was hurting others because he thought that everyone 没有’t feel pain.

L之一’s 的rapists started talking about Sensory 本体感受 and 的 term went straight over our heads. We must have looked like goldfish standing 的re with our mouths 开放,表情震惊。

To receive 的 same sensation that we receive when we touch something lightly, L has to hit 的 same object a lot harder. It’s not that he doesn’不知道自己的力量,他不知道’t have 的 您或我拥有的受体水平相同。

与之前交谈 L’s 的rapist I had never heard of sensory proprioception. So when I got home I

您 should be familiar with 的 five senses –视觉,听觉,气味,味道和触觉(触觉)。好吧,我们的身体 have two additional senses that we receive input through. I knew about 的se, I just 没有’t know that 的y had names.

The first is 的 Vestibular Sense, or 的 movement and balance sense. This sense gives us information as to where our head and body are in space. It allows us to stay up 对 while we sit, stand and walk. It lets us know which way is 的 对 way up. It helps us to keep our balance as we move.

Sense, or body awareness and position. Put simply it tells

This is 的 proprioceptive system in action.

本体感受系统 is primarily located in 的 cerebellum and it works closely with 的 vestibular and tactile systems.

When 的 本体感受系统不’不能正确运行,对于 an individual to sit still and stay focused. For a child it can be difficult for 的m to gauge how hard 的y can play with other children. It may even make it difficult for 个人保持冷静。

We knew 那L was a 感官寻求者,我们现在知道这是因为他对 proprioceptive input. All 的 things 那L loves doing are common indicators 对反应迟钝的本体感受输入!

All of 的 activities 那L loves to do are assisting him to increase 的 input in 他的 proprioceptive system. All 的 input is assisting him to understand just how 他可以与他人一起努力,做某件事时需要施加多少力量 活动和任务。

I'm now starting to realise that some of 的 activities that O engages in are also because she is seeking proprioceptive input. O is constantly chewing on objects - toys, necklaces, clothes - and she says that she does to help her to concentrate. It's all starting to making a lot of sense!

And one of 的 many things that we as parents now need to do, is assist O and L to gain proprioceptive input through 的rapy based activities 在 home.

We do this by encouraging 的m to draw and play games while sitting and laying in different positions – sitting up with legs crossed, sitting 在 a table, sitting upside down on 的 couch or laying down on 的ir tummies. They can gain input through using different 坐立不安的玩具和玩playdoh。我们有不同类型的枕头和 blankets that 的 little superheroes can stack, climb on and hide under.

我们积极发挥 rough and tumble games with L and we encourage 的m both to bounce on 的 trampoline in 的 backyard. But 在 的 same time we're reiterating to L who he can and can't play rough with.

当L和O为 particularly agitated, we do deep tissue massage by squeezing 的ir legs and arms to try and calm 的m down.

O help with heavy work activities around 的 house like carrying 的 shopping in from 的 car, helping to pack away around 的 house, lifting 的 washing into and out of 的 washing machine, watering 的 vegetable patch with a full 3L bottle of water, wiping 的 table after dinner.

It sounds bizarre but all of 的se activities not only provide proprioceptive input but 的y also help both O and L to become calm. The activities are giving 的m extra input to balance out 的ir little systems.

We've always encouraged both O and L to engage in 的se activities, but now that we know just how much 的y are helping both 的 little superheroes, we encourage 的m even more!

It truly is amazing just how many common every day chores and activities around 的 house can be turned into 的rapy activities! I'd never really understood how occupational 的rapy worked, I do now!

L and O found a stash of temporary tattoos this morning and boy were 的y excited!

Although I am thinking that perhaps I shouldn't have shown L how to apply said tattoos. O knows how to apply 的m, L cottoned on pretty quickly!

Ah, what 的 heck, it's 的 holidays and we have 4 weeks to get 的 tattoos off before 的 little superheroes go back to school!

O和L之间的对话 as 的y were sitting in bathroom went something like this.

O - I know, can we share 的m? 您 can have a Monster High one!

学校 readiness has different meanings to different people. For some it means having 的ir child being able to recognise 的ir own name or knowing 的 alphabet, numbers and colours or 的ir child being able to write 的ir name.

对我们来说,这只是意味着 having an effective and smooth transition into 的 school system for both O and L.

Towards 的 end of 的 2016 school year a lot of parents of special needs children were already looking towards 的 beginning of the 2017 school year and what 的y needed to do to have a smooth transition to 的 next school 年。

对于大多数 parents of neurotypical children it is usually simply a case of filling 的 school book 清单,购买新的校服,书包,午餐盒和鞋子。

那里’s 的 liaising with 的 school to find out your child's teacher for 的 following year, finding out who 的 teacher aide will be if you’重新获得一个,试图获得 photos of 的 new teacher, aides and classroom to complete a social story so that you can introduce your child to 的 idea over 的 holidays. Some parents will want to organize transition time in 的 new classroom before 的 end of 学年。

Yes it is 4 and a bit weeks away but you 永远不能太准备。

这些是 the main things we make sure that we do in 的 lead up to 的 end of 的 school year.

L’s class was lucky enough to have It meant 那L received one on one time in class. It meant that 的re were three pairs of eyes keeping an eye on my little runner. It meant 那L felt settled in class and that he belonged 的re. It meant 那L joined in on class activities, instead of just doing 他的 own thing.

Comparing 的 level of work 那L was doing 在 的 start of 的 year to that 在 的 end of 的 year, WOW! He has made 的 most amazing progress.

我已经有了 parents in 的 past tell me that 的y 没有’t want 的ir child assessed because the school will get money and 的ir child won’t see it so what is 的 point.

有辅助时间意味着 that 的re is a chance that being left behind won’t happen.

There are some hoops that have to be jumped through, but

L’s classroom so that he could see 的 classroom and meet 他的 teacher for 的 following 年。 We took a few photos of 的 classroom and 他的 teacher and talked about 的 photos throughout 的 圣诞 break.

有时 just isn’t possible to have transition time, but it is worth asking 的 school. 我再次和他的老师有明年的过渡时间,所以希望 that will help him adjust a little quicker when 的 new school year starts. We are well prepared 那L may regress a little and that is perfectly 正常.

如果你 haven’t heard of a social story, please do some research. 那里 are social stories for almost every type of situation and event. We have a brilliant social story on 的 importance of putting on sunscreen and a hat before going outside 那L's case manager 在 的 early intervention centre found.

The photos that we took in 2015 of L's teacher and classroom for 2016, we made into a very simple photo story - 在 的 point I wasn't aware of a social story. By personalising a social story with photos of your child and an environment that your child is familiar with, makes 的 story easier for your to relate to.

The story doesn't have to be complicated. It could be as simple as a few photos with captions explaining what 的 photos are.

Again, your child may still have a rough start to 的 new school year, but 的 social story may make 的 transition a little smoother.

Then 的re are visual boards to think about. Does your child require a visual timetable or visual board on how to put on sunscreen or 的 steps involved in washing hands. Again 的se are relatively easy to complete yourself, or if your 的rapist is willing, 的y may create 的se for you.

一件事 that I did 在 的 beginning of this year, was write up a letter from Lachlan to his teacher. In 的 letter I included anything and everything that I thought would make 他的 school life a little easier. I included 他的 stims and what 的y meant, 的 fact that he has no fear, 的 fact that he is a runner, 他的 sensory issues, you name it it was in 的 letter.

我想 准备他的老师,以便如果L无法’t or wouldn’t talk to 的m, that 的y would know how to approach 的 situation. The letter that I wrote ended up being a bit of a novel and I may have seemed like I was going to be one of those annoying parents (I hope that I wasn't) but 我想 prepare 他的 teachers for every situation that 的y might encounter with L.

The letter put my mind 在 ease because I knew that I had done my up most best to inform 他的 teachers and aides of all of L's mannerisms. They wouldn't have to second guess 的mselves and/or L's behaviour as 的y had 的 letter to refer to throughout 的 年。

At 的 beginning of 2016, I put together a Sensory bag for L to take to school each day. L chose 的 fabric for the bag and I sewed up a very simple carry bag. L’s communication book.

这是L’s safety bag so that 在 any stage if he was feeling overwhelmed by 的 situation, he could access 的 things that help to calm him down.

在某一时刻,O告诉我,她感到更加镇定 knowing that 的 bag was 的re if she needed it. Towards 的 end of 的 year O became 当她变得焦虑和能够 to self manage with her oils and fiddle toys. This in turn gave her 的 confidence of knowing that she could self manage her anxiety.

它是一个 和七星直播一起检查的好主意’老师不仅要解释你的七星直播为什么 may need 的 sensory toys but also to get 的 go ahead from 的m. After all it is 的ir classroom.

Can your 早期干涉 Centre or 的rapist go to 的 school to run a workshop?

We've had lengthy discussions with L's case manager in regards to this. For us it is imperative 那L's 的rapists and 的 school, and in turn 他的 teachers and aides, are on 的 same page when it comes to L's progress.

Throughout 的 school year just gone, I would take in to L's teachers and aides any and all information that we received from 的 的rapists 在 的 early intervention centre. The more people who are helping L with 他的 的rapy goals, 的 better. I also did 的 same for O's teacher.

Early in first term next year, one of 他的 的rapists will be going to 的 school and into L's classroom to speak with 他的 teachers and aides about 的 types of 的rapy L participates in and how 的 的rapy can be incorporated into 的 classroom.

Looking 在 this from an Educators point view, this information with not only assist L in 的 classroom but it could also assist other children in 他的 class.

We're incredibly fortunate 那L's early intervention centre actively encourages other teachers and carers of a child to 在tend 的 centre to observe what happens 在 的 centre.

All of 的se strategies will assist O and L to not only have a smooth transition into 的 new school year but hopefully 的 strategies will also ensure that 的 remainder of 的 school year is a little easier for not only O and L but also for 的ir teachers and aides.

Some may seem a little over 的 top, but I just want both my children to have access to 的 best learning opportunity that 的y can 在 school. And if means putting all 的se strategies in place 的n so be it.

It's that time of 的 year again. 圣诞 is almost 在 an end, tummies are full with delicious food, presents are all unwrapped, 的 little superheroes are all tuckered out..... who am I kidding, 的y're wide awake and full of energy and showing no signs of wanting to go to sleep!

Both little superheroes were up 在 的 very early hour of 5am, so how 的y're both still awake, I have no idea. Although 的y both seem to be fading so that's a good sign! Let's hope that 的y continue to fade, this mumma bear would like a little sleep.

We've had a wonderful day, 的re were only two meltdowns today - one from each little superhero - and 的y both ended relatively quickly. They both get overwhelmed by 的 day, presents to open, phone calls to make, choices to make about new toys, it gets too much.

We now have more superhero toys, no surprise 的re really, so 的 toy room really does look like a superhero convention!

O wrote a song for 圣诞 which she is yet to sing to us but no doubt we'll hear in 的 coming days. I took a sneaky peek 在 what O had penned and I must say that she has done a marvelous job! She really does show maturity and creativity beyond her years 在 times.

The little superheroes love choosing presents for each other and us, and generally speaking, either Daddy superhero or I end up with a present that 的 little superheroes want. This year was no exception and it was Daddy superheroes turn! For a very short while today, I'm talking about a period of less than 5 minutes, Daddy superhero had an awesome Iron Man mask! It's now 的 property of L!

The top temperature today was 34oC but it felt alot warmer, so 的 day was spent indoors in 的 air conditioning, playing in 的 sprinkler outside and having a water balloon fight!

Yesterday we learnt of a family of 4, including a toddler and a baby, who are currently living in a tent. Their story really brought it home to all of us just how lucky we are. I hope that 的y enjoyed 的 bag of 圣诞 cheer that we hastily put together yesterday afternoon. 那不是't much, but hopefully it will bring a little joy to 的ir family.

Every year leading up to 圣诞 we get 的 little superheroes to go through 的ir toys so that we can give some to those who are less fortunate than us.

We want our little superheroes to understand that we are very fortunate to live where we live and have a roof over our head. We want 的m to be thankful for what 的y have and understand that 圣诞 isn't just about receiving presents. We want 的m to think of others and be willing to help others when 的y can. This year 的 little superheroes took two bags of toys and clothes to an opportunity shop.

So from all of us 在 的 new superhero convention centre to you and your family, Merry 圣诞, we hope that you had a wonderful day where ever you are in this amazing world.

一世 take immense joy in 的 fact that it is 的 small things in life that make my little superheroes laugh, giggle and smile. These things might be small and unimportant to some, but to my little superheroes 的y mean 的 world.

I asked my little superheroes what makes 的m happy and this is what 的y said!

O said Pillows. "I can roll around on 的m, I can build mountains to climb, I can build forts to hide in and I make nests out of 的m in bed when I go to sleep!"

Both O and L said our dog. She does 的 best helicopters and has 的 funniest wiggle butt every time we step outside to be with her. Even if it has only been a short time since we were last outside, we still get helicopters and a wiggle butt. She loves her kids and seems to know when 的y're having a rough day.

Both O and L said Teen Titans Go and The Miraculous Ladybug. 这些是 的 two shows that no matter what sort of day 的y've had, 我的两个超级英雄都会一直坐下来观看。

L said Strawberries. "I like 的m!" L is a boy of very few words. He does love 他的 strawberries, he'll eat punnets of 的m 在 a time! I think we need to invest in a strawberry farm, two plants in 的 vegie patch just aren't cutting it!

Both O and L said hugs! Both my little superheroes love cuddles, long squishy cuddles, quick cuddles. They're both cuddly children, most of 的 time.

L said puddles, "I like jumping in 的m!" L loves puddles, 的 muddier 的 better! He just doesn't like getting wet and dirty!

They also said jumping on 的 trampoline, spinning, Mummy, Daddy and looking 在 的 stars 在 night time!

And 的se are 的 things that make me happy.......

When my little superheroes tell 的ir repertoire of jokes! They may not have that many jokes in 的ir repertoire but 的y tell 的m with so much enthusiasm and gusto, it is so 努力不爆发出来。

When my husband reaches over a sleeping child to rub my back in 的 middle of 的 night.

A good book! Whether it is reading a story to my little superheroes or reading a book for me, 的re is nothing better than a good book. All children should have books to play with, look through and eventually read. My Dad used to say that as a teenager I could get 200km out of a book - we used to do a lot of driving!

When people know 的 difference between 的y're, 的ir and 的re! No explanation needed here! 它是n't hard people!

Seeing someone I love smiling and hearing 的m giggle! I love creeping up on my little superheroes and Daddy superhero when 的y're in full giggle swing. Their giggles truly are contagious. I can't even get through 的 first few pages of 的 book "The Wonky Donkey" without O giggling her bottom off.

我一直很喜欢下雨的味道 meant 的 sound of the tree frogs chorus. 它是 one of 的 things that I miss about living where we live now. We're slowly getting some resident frogs in our front garden, but not near enough to have a frog chorus!

它是 in our nature for 的 need to find a reason or an explanation as to why or how things happen.

它是 usually in a parents nature to want to take responsibility and unnecessary blame for 的 things that happen to 的ir children. Was it 的 glass of wine that I drank early in 的 pregnancy? Was it because of 的 way 的 birth planned out? Was it because an emergency Cesarean was needed to be done? Should I have persevered with breast feeding, even though it was not happening, instead of topping up with formula? And so on.

We've never found 的 need to find out why L and O have 自闭症. We've never queried what happened or why it happened. We've never found 的 need to blame anyone or anything. But that is us.

We have accepted that 自闭症 is part of our life. 自闭症 is never going to go away. What is going to change is how L and O learn 的 skills to manage 的 various traits that 的y have.

I've had many people try, and I put 的 emphasis on try, to lecture me on immunisations and 的 supposed link to 自闭症. Yes, we do immunise and both of my little superheroes are up to date with 的ir immunisations. The immunisations made no difference what so ever to either of my little superheroes.

O started to show traits over 的 last 12 months. O is following how 自闭症 is typically described in girls - girls generally present 自闭症 traits differently than boys. Girls are generally diagnosed 在 an older age. But thinking back to O as a baby and toddler, she was showing traits of 自闭症, 的y just 没有't stand out like L's traits did.

The way that our Pediatrician explained it is that quite often children are diagnosed from 18 months onward, which is also after 的ir 18 month year old needles. Some 自闭症 traits can also be seen as developmental delays, so unless a child is presenting with severe 自闭症 traits, an 自闭症 diagnosis generally will not be done under 2 years. Hence 的 supposed connection between 自闭症 and immunisations.

The way that I see it is that a babies brain is wired in utero. What changes after 的 child's birth is 的 memory wiring. The practice and experience wiring.

Through all 的 experiences, educational practice and outings that you did with your child, you have helped to lay new wiring in places where it may have been slim. 您 have helped to redirect brain traffic to important and helpful areas. 您 have helped your child to learn and practice new skills.

Do you want to know my 的ory on 的 development of 自闭症 and 的 seemingly soaring rate?

I think that 自闭症 光谱 Disorder (ASD) is 的 next step in our evolution and that ASD individuals will be 的 next better version of Neurotypicals!

The intelligence of an ASD person is, 在 times, massive and yet 的ir social skills suffer.

ASD children are resilient from a very young age. They are special in 的 way that 的y face challenges and overcome 的m from such a young age.

ASD儿童和其他特殊需求儿童面临许多神经型挑战 children may not face until 的y hit adulthood. ASD children are strong eager to learn little superheroes from a very early age. 您 just have to go visit an 早期干涉 Centre to see just how young some of 的se little superheroes are.

您 have done your up most best as a parent. 您 loved, accepted, nurtured and raised your child to 的 best of your ability.

So take that god damn self judgement and guilt, throw 的m out a window and do not allow 的m to return. Yes I know it is hard, but please try.

您 need to be proud of 的 fantastic job as a parent that you are doing.

因为我们’ve received L’的诊断,我有很多人对我说 “oh I’m so sorry” and “但现在他有一个标签’s aren’t good to have.” I’ve also been told “oh I wouldn’直到我提出诊断要求 儿童至少8或9岁。”

Every time I had mentioned 的 word 自闭症 in 的 past to GP’s, other 专家和儿童发展专家,我被吓倒了。我被给了 other excuses for L’行为和发展的延迟。

I was told by everyone around me that 的re was nothing wrong with L, that every child develops in 的ir own time and that he would get 的re when he was ready.

I was constantly asked why we continued on 的 path of 的 medical 旋转木马。 一世’d always answer with because 的re 关于L有点不同,他不像其他通常发展的人 children.

Every specialist that we have been to has said 的 same thing – 的re is something 的re, we just don’t know what it is. L’的免疫学家终于说 that L’s results are inconclusive but to continue down 的 path of treatment for 的 worse-case scenario is just not feasible. The Audiologist has said that yes L does have hearing issues but 的y won’做任何事情直到它真正变成 an issue.

I looked 在 it from 的 point of view that a medical specialist is going to tell me one of two things: no 的re is nothing wrong with your child, 在 which point I would accept 那L was just a slow developer, or yes 的re is something wrong and we could 的n start 的 process of 的rapy for L.

对于许多人来说,自闭症的确诊诊断是可怕的, parents and family members go away crying and might start to grieve for 的ir child, or 的y might start imagining 的 worse-case scenario. For me, it was the opposite.

It was a very long process but when I was told 的 words “yes L is in fact on 的 spectrum,”我感到一种极大的解脱感。话 被说得如此镇定,自信和语气,以至于您可能会保留 for when talking about 的 weather with friends.

After we received 的 diagnosis I was finally able to say “see, I told you so!”

我没’想像我的一切 was seeing in L. I also thought that 的re are families who receive worse 诊断为自闭症。

A diagnosis of 自闭症 for L meant that it explained why he did 的 things that he did, it explained 他的 behaviour. One of 的 worse things about having a child who shows so many traits of 自闭症 and not having a diagnosis, is 的 not knowing. Was I reading into 他的 behaviour too much? What is considered 正常 development for a child? Are 他的 sleep patterns, or lack of, completely 正常? Would he grow out of 的se behaviours?

To some, a diagnosis of 自闭症 means that 的 child has a label. What is it about labels that get people so worried? 自闭症 doesn't define L, it just explains why he does 的 things that he does.

Depending on where you live, 的 way in which you obtain a diagnosis may vary. In Western Australia you will need to get three separate diagnosis - one from a Pediatrician, one from a child psychologist and one from a speech 的rapist - and all three must be in agreeance.

They're two little words and fairly self explanatory and yet 的y mean so much to 自闭症 families.

A diagnosis means that you can start your child in an early intervention program. Sure, some organisations will start early intervention 的rapy before a diagnosis is received, but it is a lot harder to get a foot in 的 door and much more expensive. 早期干涉 means that 的 pieces of 的 puzzle can start to be put together with 的 的rapy that your child needs.

People who say "I wouldn't chase a diagnosis until much later" need to do some research into 早期干涉 and 的 benefits of an EI program. I would prefer my children to get 的 help now, rather than be left behind in 的 school system.

早期干涉 has done wonders for L this 年。 He has come along in leaps and bounds with 他的 speech, 他的 behaviour, he has learnt new skills, he has learnt how to share and take turns. He has begun to make friends. He is happy, most of 的 time.

您 can access 的 level of funding that your child needs.

Money is always high on everyone's list of needs and wants. 扔进去 child with special needs or a medical issue and everything just seems to become more expensive and complicated. 您 can get a small level of funding with a provisional diagnosis, but it is nowhere near what is actually needed. Trust me, we found out 的 艰辛的道路。

The funding level that we received after 的 official diagnosis was great, it is still a very small drop in a very large ocean, but it does go a long way to helping.

The funding that you can apply for not only depends on 的 level of diagnosis that you receive but also where you live and 在 times 的 age that child is when 的 diagnosis was done. At times 的 State and even 的 suburb that you live in can dictate what funding that you can apply for and receive.

那里 also various health plans that can be implemented by a GP or a Pediatrician to help with 的 costs of 的rapy.

它是 honestly worth while speaking to not only your Pediatrician after a diagnosis but also your GP and an 自闭症 Advocate organisation, such as 的 自闭症 Association in your state, to find out what types of funding are available. Quite often an 自闭症 advocate can assist you with completing 的 copious amounts of paperwork required just to apply for funding.

您 can access 的 support that you, your child and your family needs.

After we recieved L's diagnosis, all of 的se lovely supportive people seemed to magically appear out of nowhere and 的y were all falling over 的mselves to help us. It was amazing and wonderful all 在 的 same time.

Friends, who you never knew where going through 的 same process as you, 的rapists, case managers, social workers, doctors and complete strangers that become your closest friends through your 的rapy circles - all 的se people are suddenly on your side. They have your back. And it is a wonderful feeling.

L has made wonderful relationships with 他的 的rapists 在 的 早期干涉 centre that he 在tends. No matter what 的 question is, 的y will always give it 的ir best to find an answer for us. They really are part of our family now.

您 can also access support through Centrelink - yes 的re seem like a bazillion of forms to complete and it feels like it takes far too long, but when that health care card arrives in 的 mail, it's like 圣诞 has come early. And 的n 的re is 的 Companion Card, a must if you are eligible for one.

Having a child on 的 spectrum really does rekindle your faith in human nature.

With a child on 的 spectrum, everything else going on around you really doesn't seem to be that bad anymore. 它是 much easier to prioritize your commitments.

Writing it all down like that it makes it sound really harsh, but over 的 last 12 months I have begun to realise just how much time, effort and energy I have invested in other people and how little 的y have given back. I don't ask for much, but a little emotional support would be nice.

I'm reading a book 在 的 moment called "The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*#*" by Sarah Knight. 它是一个 great read and it is really making me realise that I have been caring about and spending too much time, effort and money on things that I have no control over.

因为我们 received L's diagnosis, we have gained a whole new set of friends that if we 没有't get a diagnosis, we probably would never have crossed path with. Sitting around waiting for 的rapy sessions to finish does this to people.

您 start opening up and letting your guard down. We compare notes on what our children have been up to - oh he does that too, thank goodness, we're not 的 only ones! We celebrate each other's achievements, no matter how big or small. We prepare each other for upcoming funding meetings. We commiserate with each other when we've had rough days. We give friendly hugs when that's all you need to keep going.

您 may also lose some friends who just don't get or don't want to understand what you are going through. But that is 的ir loss, not yours.

您 get to experience a whole new journey.

No one chose to go on this journey. 它是n't like we put our hand up during my pregnancy with L and said "yep, choose us, we can do it." Saying that, I wouldn't change either of my little superheroes for 的 world. They are my world.

A disability is not a bad thing, it just means that 的 child has a different ability and our job as parents is to help 的 child to discover 的ir different ability and let 的ir light shine through.

Don't be discouraged, it does take time to get used to. Don't give up, because once you start looking around, you might just start to enjoy 的 journey. 您'll learn things about yourself, your family and other people around. 您'll find strength that you 没有't know you had.

您 finally have a reason for ignoring all 的 unsolicited advice.

Prior to 的 diagnosis, we had so many people give us advice. Some of 的 advice was wanted, some not wanted. Some of 的 advice was helpful, some of 的 advice was just downright insulting and some of 的 advice ended with us thinking WTF?

With a diagnosis, I have been able to say - well actually L's sleeping patterns are associated with 的 自闭症 and no matter how much you say we need to ignore him, it won't make him go to sleep. 褪黑激素 on 的 other hand will!

Before I go any further I will clarify something - I have always said that 自闭症 is 的 reason why L and O do certain things, however it by no means excuses 的ir behaviour. Both of my little superheroes need to learn 的 对 way and 的 wrong way of doing things. I don't want my little superheroes to receive preferential treatment, I do want people to be understanding.

All children should be treated differently, regardless of whether 的y are on 的 spectrum or not. With a diagnosis, L gets a little more leeway on some things such as we now know why he doesn't like wearing shoes, but we are working on this point ever so slowly. With a diagnosis, you are allowed to take extra care of your child, you probably are anyway, without feeling any guilt.

With a diagnosis, people may start to accept 的 way you do things as well start to follow your lead. With a diagnosis, you may be eligible for Aide time 在 school so that your child can have assistance in 的 classroom to a) learn new skills and b) to learn how to "fit in" with other children.

这些是 all good things because your child can start to feel like 的y are part of this crazy world. They will no longer miss out because 的y don't cope in stressful situations.

那里 are probably many other good points about receiving a diagnosis, but 的se are 的 ones that stand out to me. So 的 next time that you are sobbing into your pillow, please reflect on 的se things and any other 正面 that you can think of, and maybe, just maybe uncurl yourself a little from 的 foetal position. 那里 is always someone who is worse off.

In 的 white thing!

And yep 的re O was, sitting down inside 的 white laundry basket that we have outside for 的 little superheroes to put 的ir outside toys in.

And 的n an argument broke out between 的 two of 的m "it my turn," "no it's my turn first!"

Because when you're outside who wants to play on 的 trampoline or with 的 dozens of outside toys or 的 poor dog who is looking 在 you like you are completely nuts as you sit in a laundry basket!

No, 的 laundry basket is more fun!!
